TOPIC: COMMITMENT TO THE CHURCH

TEXT COLOSIANS 4:17; 1 COR 16:13-19 : PHIL 4:14 -19  

Introduction:

The church is the people who believed on the saving work of the Son of God at the Cross, people who, by faith, believed they were sanctified by the blood of Jesus, and people who adhered to the claims and message of Jesus Christ. By this definition, we understand that we are the church. This congregation is the church of God, a local visible part of the universal invisible church.

Commitment is more than attendance on Sunday. It's about involvement in the mission of the church. It is about engaging in kingdom work, the most important work on earth. Only the church can share the gospel, only the church can minister in Jesus' name. Heads of state cannot do it. Powerful governments cannot do it. The UN cannot do it. Jesus has entrusted that task to the church. The church is the only agency God has on earth for doing his will.

The way to be ready is to be committed. Each of us is a part of this church family, of this church organization, and of this church army. We must each one love, serve, and fight with a deep commitment. We are members of the Family of God. How do we live up our commitment? 

What do a successful marriage, a successful business and a successful expedition have in common? They all possess clearly defined goals. The people in them are focused, they know what they want and they will remove any obstacles that would prevent them reaching their goal.

Similarly, a successful local church is composed of people who are committed to Christ and who understand that when Christ called them to him, he called them to his church. The local church then needs leaders who have a clear vision for the church and its calling to proclaim the gospel and to build up the faith in the body of believers. When no opportunity for spiritual development, growth or meaningful fellowship is provided, poor commitment is inevitable. We are saved in community. Together we are members of Christ's body, we belong to a family, we are citizens of a kingdom, and we are joined together. "Together" is a dominant theme when Paul is writing about the church. (Ephesians 2:14-22; 3:6; 4:16) God's eternal plan to save the lost is realised in the thousands of local churches of his people. The church is the centrepiece of God's grace, God's love and God's eternal purpose. Every baptised believer is called upon to live out the reality of this truth through commitment to the life of the church.

A.PEOPLE COMMITTED TO THE CHURCH

1. Paul said of Timothy, "I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 2:20-21) Timothy was genuinely committed to the Philippian Christians.

2. The household of Stephanas "devoted themselves to the service of the saints." (1 Corinthians 16:15) The word "devoted" gives us our English word, addict. This family was addicted to service. They were committed to the church.

3. Priscilla and Aquila were Paul's fellow workers in Christ Jesus, and committed members of the church. Paul says of them, "They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them."1 cor 16 19  (Romans 16:3-5)

4. Paul sent greetings to Rufus and his mother. Paul says of Rufus' mother, "She has been a mother to me, too." (Romans 16:13) This godly lady looked after Paul, fussed over him, prayed for him and did for him those extra special things mothers do for their children. That's commitment to the church.

5. Barnabas didn't have a selfish bone in his body. He was known as "the son of encouragement." (Acts 4:36) And when he heard of the growth of the church among the Gentiles, "he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts." (Acts 11:22-24) He was committed to the church because it belongs the Lord Jesus Christ.

6. When Dorcas died, her departure was lamented because she "was always doing good and helping the poor." (Acts 9:36,39) This was a woman whose life was committed to the church.

B.WHAT COMMITMENT TO THE CHURCH LOOKS LIKE

1. Committed members of the local church always have a keen sense of awareness.They know what's going on because they know the other Christians. They don't live on the fringes; they are at the heart of the life of the church. What's happening in the church is important to them. 

2. They live their life for the Lord on high alert. They don't forget to entertain strangers knowing that such people may have been sent to them by God. 

3. They refuse to be indifferent to the needs of those in prison and those who are mistreated. It's as if they themselves were suffering. (Hebrews 13:2-3) 

4. They see people as God sees them and so they care for "the least of these my brethren." (Matthew 25:45) They know who "the least" are in the church - those who are easily overlooked, neglected, or forgotten- and they respond to them. 

5. The committed church member will be found serving "the least." You don't hear them say, "I didn't know." They make it their business to know.

6. Those who are committed to the church have never lost their sense of wonder, that sense of awe that they are loved by God - hence their commitment to the church, the body of Christ.

C. WHY   COMMITMENT TO THE CHURCH 

1) The local church is a central part of Gods strategic plan for your spiritual growth.

I have often heard the statement, Well, I dont need to go to church to be a Christian. On a slight technicality, that may be true, but it is certainly far-removed from Gods true plan.

Jesus said, On this rock [Peters statement that Jesus was the Messiah and Son of God] I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not be able to stand against it (Matthew 16:18). You see, the church is Jesus idea, not mans idea. It seems like we should pay attention to His plan since it came directly from Him.

When a person says they dont need the church, that is a departure from Gods plan. I would advise against that.

2) You are basically a composite of the five people with whom you spend the most time.

 friends could influence young people for either good or for bad. Even adults are influenced by their friends and the people with whom they spend time.

I have come to believe that we are basically a composite of the five people with whom we spend the most time. It is important, therefore, that we choose those people well. That is why it is so valuable for us to be in church every time the doors are open. We need to expose ourselves as much as possible to other followers of Christ who will draw us nearer to God.

Paul said it like this: But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sins deceitfulness. (Hebrews 3:13 NIV)  We need the support of other believers if we are truly going to grow in Christ.

3) You need the voice of the church to counteract all of the deception that is crammed into your mind all throughout the week.

Paul warns believers in Colossians 2:8, Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.  (NKJV)

The word for cheat in this passage refers to kidnapping another person. We need to be careful that we are not kidnapped by false ideologies, by wrong thinking.

The term traditions refers to teachings. Do you realize how many ungodly teachers are speaking into your life every week? Internet. News media. Nollywood. Music. Co-workers. Friends and family. The list seems never ending. With so many messages streaming into your life every week that can kidnap you and take you away from God, it is extremely critical that you spend as much time in church as possible to fill your mind with godly wisdom and discernment. Soak in all you can whenever you can!

4)  Weekly ministry in a local church helps to build up your spiritual muscles.

In Ephesians 4, Paul says that we all are gifted in different ways. When we use our own particular gifts to serve within a church, it is a like a body with many body parts that all work together for a common goal.

As Paul discusses serving in this chapter, I find it interesting that he threw in the comment in Ephesians 4:14 in which he says, ... that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting. In other words, when we use our spiritual gifts by serving within the local church community, we somehow become better-grounded theologically.  It will be more difficult for us to be deceived into thinking things that are not true according to Gods Word. Isnt that amazing? Serving makes us more theologically astute. Im not exactly sure how that works, but I do know that I have observed it to be true in my own life as well as in the lives of so many I have watched to grow in their journey with the Lord.

D. BENEFITS OF COMMITMENT IN CHURCH 

Ive grown in my relationship with the Lord and His church Ive realized more and more how important and beneficial commitment to  church  and membership is. If youre on the fence about  commitment  to a church or struggle with the desire to want to go at all, I want to encourage you with these beautiful benefits of church membership.and commitment

1. The Church Equips, Trains, and Builds Believers.

One of the significant purposes of the church is to train up believers to a life that gives God glory. Once we accept Christ into our lives, we are instantly justified, meaning we are forgiven of our sin and no longer subject to the wrath of God. We also then start a process called sanctification. This does not happen instantly like justification but over the course of our entire lives. This is the process of us becoming more like Christ. Sanctification does not occur in isolation. Hebrews 10:24-25.

God established the church that we may find the wisdom, tools, help, and accountability to help us through the process of sanctification; that we may learn and grow from one another. As Christians, we should be developing and maturing, and the church is one of the primary ways we can ensure that growth happens. Ephesians 4:11-13. 

2. The Church Provides Spiritual  Protection from the Enemy.

As Christians, we have an enemy of which we need to be aware. 

1 Peter 5: 8 tells us: Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

We should be aware of our enemy but not fearful of him. The Lord has graciously provided us with every spiritual weapon we need to protect and defend ourselves against the schemes of the enemy. One of the most significant ways we find protection is in the church. There is strength in numbers, and the enemy is more prone to attack a Christian who is alone and off to themselves than one who is connected to a healthy local church and supported by Christian community. Ephesians 6:11.

3. The Church Offers the Opportunity to Share Our Gifts.

 The church is not only about what we can get out of it. The church is also about what we can give. Many times we lose sight of the beauty of the church when we think its all about us. Church, however, offers a unique opportunity to not only receive the gifts of others but also develop and share our own gifts.Romans 12:6-8.

"When done right, church has the capacity like nothing else to grow, protect, and train us."

I understand there are many hesitations people have when it comes to joining a local church. When done right, church has the capacity like nothing else to grow, protect, and train us into the people  God is calling us to be. Its this type of unity that Jesus prayed for us: John 17:20-2

"We should love what Jesus loves."

As Christians, we should love what Jesus loves. So if He loves the church, so should we. It is my prayer that if youre not committed  in a church, you will be committed to one today . 

4. The Church is a place to be served. 

Just as the various parts of our bodies depend on one another, so, as it is described in Scripture, Christians are to be reliant upon one another. Your eye gives you vision; your ear gives you sound. All the while, your brain processes the images and sounds so you can respond to your environment. You cannot see or hear with your individual organs, nor just with your brain. When you are involved in the church, you will find that you are in a community where one another's needs are met as all work together in oneness and purpose for God's glory. God normally meets our needs by using others, and He uses you to meet the needs of others; this is the church's purpose with Christ as the head of it. Church members need to depend on one another just as the members of a human body do (1 Cor. 12; 14-27; James 5:13-16)!

5. Church is a place to grow.

 Just as our physical bodies need nourishment to function, so our spiritual lives need to be fed. This spiritual food is discipleship, which includes worship, prayer, good biblical instruction, and mentoring. As Christians praise God and pray, a special bond comes about. Gifted teachers and preachers who know and use God's Word and care about you can help you grow. So, commit yourself in a good church and grow (Acts 20:7; Col. 3: 16; Heb. 10:25)!

6. Church is a place to work together.

 Our Christian faith is personal but not private. Healthy Christians are not loners; rather, we are in relationship with one another. God uses our intimacy and commitment  with one another to help us. In so doing, we are spurring one another on. As He is intimate with us, we are to be so with one another. Jesus said that the world would watch relationships among Christians: "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:35) The church's role is to help us learn how to love and obey God and keep us accountable and involved (John 13:34-35).

CONCLUSION

Let me end this workshop by encouraging you to be a part of the serving and sacrificing to live up to our commitment to be the body of Christ here. I want you to be sowing so we can be reaping. Be blessed by being a blessing to Gods family here.

 Yes, we do need  to be committed  to  a good, healthy church so we can be recharged and refreshed to do the work of our Lord. We need a place where we can grow and be encouraged and nurtured so we can be filled with the power to go out and do more work for the Lord. Christians I have met who say they do not need to be committed to a church are lethargic and do little or  nothing for either the Lord or for their own personal growth.

Intro to Genesis

* The following notes are based on the English Standard Version text of Scripture.

Introduction to Genesis
Gen. 1:1–2:3 This description of God creating heaven and earth is understood to be: 1) recent, i.e., thousands not millions of years ago; 2)ex nihilo, i.e., out of nothing; and 3) special, i.e., in six consecutive 24-hour periods called “days” and further distinguished as such by this phrase, “there was evening and there was morning.” Scripture does not support a creation date earlier than about 10,000 years ago. In the beginning. While God exists eternally (Ps. 90:2), this marked the beginning of the universe in time and space. In explaining Israel’s identity and purpose to her on the plains of Moab, God wanted his people to know about the origin of the world in which they found themselves.God. Elohim is a general term for deity and a name for the True God, though used also at times for pagan gods (Gen. 31:30), angels (Ps. 8:5), men (Ps. 82:6), and judges (Ex. 21:6). Moses made no attempt to defend the existence of God, which is assumed, or explain what he was like in person and works, which is treated elsewhere (cf. Isa. 43:10; 13). Both are to be believed by faith (cf. Heb. 11:3; 6). created. This word is used here of God’s creative activity alone, although it occasionally is used elsewhere of matter that already existed (Isa. 65:18). Context demands in no uncertain terms that this was a creation without preexisting material (as does other Scripture: cf. Isa. 40:28; 45:8; 12; 18; 48:13; Jer. 10:16; Acts 17:24). the heavens and the earth. All of God’s creation is incorporated into this summary statement that includes all six, consecutive days of creation.
Gen. 1:2 without form and void.This means “not finished in its shape and as yet uninhabited by creatures” (cf. Isa. 45:18; 19; Jer. 4:23). God would quickly (in six days) decorate his initial creation (Gen. 1:2–2:3). deep.Sometimes referred to as primordial waters, this is the term used to describe the earth’s water-covered surface before the dry land emerged (1:9–10). Jonah used this word to describe the watery abyss in which he found himself submerged (Jonah 2:5). Spirit of God. Not only did God the Holy Spirit participate in creation, but so did God the Son (cf. John 1:1–3; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2).
Gen. 1:3 God said. God effortlessly spoke light into existence (cf. Ps. 33:6; 148:5). This dispelled the darkness of Gen. 1:2. light. The greater and lesser lights (the sun and moon) were created later (1:14–19) on the fourth day. Here, God was the provider of light (2 Cor. 4:6) and will in eternity future be the source of light (cf. Rev. 21:23).
Gen. 1:4 good. Good for the purposes it was intended to serve (cf. v. 31).
Gen. 1:4–5 separated . . . called.After the initial creation, God continued to complete his universe. Once God separated certain things, he then named them. Separating and naming were acts of dominion and served as a pattern for man, who would also name a portion of God’s creation over which God gave him dominion (2:19–20).
Gen. 1:5 first day. God established the pattern of creation in seven days, which constituted a complete week. “Day” can refer to: 1) the light portion of a 24-hour period (1:5; 14); 2) an extended period of time (2:4); or 3) the 24-hour period which basically refers to a full rotation of the earth on its axis, called evening and morning. This cannot mean an age, but only a day, reckoned by the Jews from sunset to sunset (1:8; 13; 19; 23; 31). “Day” with numerical adjectives in Hebrew always refers to a 24-hour period. Comparing the order of the week inEx. 20:8–11 with the creation week confirms this understanding of the time element. Such a cycle of light and dark means that the earth was rotating on its axis, so that there was a source of light on one side of the earth, though the sun was not yet created (Gen. 1:16).
Gen. 1:6 expanse. The portion of God’s creation named “heavens,” that which man saw when he looked up, i.e., the atmospheric and stellar heaven.
Gen. 1:7 under the expanse. Refers to subterranean reservoirs (cf. 7:11).above the expanse. This could possibly have been a canopy of water vapor that acted to make the earth like a hothouse, provided uniform temperature, inhibited mass air movements, caused mist to fall, and filtered out ultraviolet rays, thus extending life.
Gen. 1:9–10 dry land. This was caused by a tremendous, cataclysmic upheaval of the earth’s surface, and the rising and sinking of the land, which caused the waters to plunge into the low places, forming the seas, the continents and islands, the rivers and lakes (cf. Job 38:4–11; Ps. 104:6–9).
Gen. 1:11–12 according to its kind. God set in motion a providential process whereby the vegetable kingdom could reproduce through seeds which would maintain each one’s unique characteristics. The same phrase is used to describe the perpetuating reproduction of animals within their created species (vv. 21;24; 25), and indicates that evolution, which proposes reproduction across species lines, is a false explanation of origins.
Gen. 1:11 yielding seed. The principle of reproduction that marks all life (cf. vv. 22; 24; 28).
Gen. 1:14 lights. Cf. v. 16. For three days there had been light (v. 4) in the day as though there were a sun, and lesser light at night as though there were the moon and stars. God could have left it that way, but did not. He created the “lights, sun, moon, and stars,” not for light, but to serve as markers for signs, seasons, days, and years. signs. Certainly to include: 1) weather (Matt. 16:2–3); 2) testimony to God (Ps. 8; 19; Rom. 1:14–20; 3) divine judgment (Joel 2:30–31;Matt. 24:29); and 4) navigation (Matt. 2:1–2). seasons. It is the earth’s movement in relation to the sun and moon that determines the seasons and the calendar.
Gen. 1:15–18 two great lights . . . to separate the light from the darkness. It was God (not some other deity) who created the lights. Israel had originally come from Mesopotamia, where the celestial bodies were worshiped, and more recently from Egypt, where the sun was worshiped as a primary deity. God was revealing to them that the very stars, moons, and planets that Israel’s neighbors had worshiped were the products of his creation. Later, they became worshipers of the “host of heaven” (see note on 2 Kings 17:16), which led to their being taken captive out of the Promised Land.
Gen. 1:20 living creatures. These creatures, including the extraordinarily large ones, included all sorts of fish and mammals, even dinosaurs (see notes on Job 40:15–41:1).
Gen. 1:22 blessed. This is the first occurrence of the word “bless” in Scripture. God’s admonition to “be fruitful and multiply” was the substance of the blessing.
Gen. 1:24–25 livestock . . . beasts.This probably represents all kinds of large, four-legged animals.
Gen. 1:24 beasts of the earth.Different from and larger than the clan of cattle, this would include dinosaurs like Behemoth (Job 40:15ff.).
Gen. 1:26 us . . . our. The first clear indication of the triunity of God (cf.3:22; 11:7). The very name of God, Elohim (1:1), is a plural form of El.man. The crowning point of creation, a living human, was made in God’s image to rule creation. our image.This defined man’s unique relation to God. Man is a living being capable of embodying God’s communicable attributes (cf. 9:6; Rom. 8:29; Col. 3:10; James 3:9). In his rational life, he was like God in that he could reason and had intellect, will, and emotion. In the moral sense, he was like God because he was good and sinless.
Gen. 1:26–28 dominion over. This defined man’s unique relation to creation. Man was God’s representative in ruling over the creation. The command to rule separated him from the rest of living creation and defined his relationship as above the rest of creation (cf. Ps. 8:6–8).
Gen. 1:27 male and female. Cf.Matt. 19:4 and Mark 10:6. While these two persons equally shared God’s image and together exercised dominion over creation, they were by divine design physically diverse in order to accomplish God’s mandate to multiply, i.e., neither one could reproduce offspring without the other.
Gen. 1:28 blessed. This second blessing (cf. v. 22) involved reproduction and dominion. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. God, having just created the universe, created his representative (dominion over) and representation (cf. image and likeness). Man would fill the earth and oversee its operation. “Subdue” does not suggest a wild and unruly condition for the creation because God himself pronounced it “good.” Rather, it speaks of a productive ordering of the earth and its inhabitants to yield its riches and accomplish God’s purposes.
Gen. 1:29–30 for food . . . for food. Prior to the curse (3:14–19), both mankind and beasts were vegetarians.

Gen. 1:31 very good. What had been pronounced good individually (vv. 4;10; 12; 18; 21; 25) was now called “very good” collectively. The words anticipated God’s conclusion that it was “not good” for a man to be alone (2:18), which occurred on the sixth day.

Balaam told Balak to build seven evil altars to enable him to carry out evil against Israel. Num 23:1-2, 13-14,27-30. These evil altars must be destroyed.

Tuesday

Jeremiah 1:10

God instructed Jeremiah to destroy all evil things. Uproot, overthrow and tear down. He asked him to build and plant good things in his life and in Israel.

How do I build good things?

It is simple; begin to speak good things upon your life from today.

Wednesday

You shall not worship the Lord your God with such things, God told them (Deut12:2-4)

God asked them to dispossess evil spirits (their gods). Likewise today, God instructed us to dispossess evil spirits, evil altars, evil images, and things like that in our lives.

Thursday

1 Kings 13:1-32; 2 Kings 23:1-25

The man of God in 1 Kings 13:1-32 succeeded to carry out the destruction of the evil altar but died, why? Disobedience. We must learn to obey God so that we live. King Josiah lived upright and feared God to letters. Then God was with him in destroying all the evil altars and images in the land of Israel. May God be with us as we go on destroying all evil altars in our lives in Jesus’ name. My victory will not cause me death. (7 times)

Friday: Numbers 33:50-56

Stand that every altar must be destroyed in your life. Nothing shall remain. God demanded the Israelites do operation-wipe –out anything evil. Otherwise anything remaining will be a threat later to them. Your prayer in this week will be a prayer of clearance.

Saturday: I Kings 18:40

Note that in the passage read, both their altar and their gods lacked power. Also, all the priests were executed and the altar of God was repaired. This week, pray until those evil altars and their priests, are no more in your life.

Friday: Christ has made an everlasting altar with his blood for us

Hebrews 9:11-15

But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building, neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. Satanic altars

Scripture: 1 Kings 13:1-5 , Exodus 23:1
Introduction So many satanic altars are raised against a child of God to prevent the fulfiment of the purpose of God in his life, but this altars could be pull down by the power of the Holy Spirit.

PULLING DOWN SATANIC ALTERS
1 kings 13:1-5

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.
3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
- We can see several emphases on the altar:
1. Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense: Sacrifice is offered at the alter to Satan or God depending on who is offering and what and how is being offered.
2. The man of God cried against the altar: It is possible to speak against satanic altars in the name of the Lord. I pray that the word of God will pull down all satanic altars raised against you in Jesus name.
3. The king stretches forth his hand from the altar against the man of God: Evil can be programmed against the people of God from satanic altars.
4. The altar was rent and the ashes poured out from the altar: Satanic altar can be completely destroyed through a prophetic utterance in the name of the Lord. I prophesy against all satanic altars raised against the purpose of God in your life in Jesus name.

We shall be looking into this study under three subheadings:
1. The Purposes of Satanic Altars
2. The Processes at Satanic Altars
3. The Power to pull down Satanic Altars

1. The Purposes of Satanic Altars:
Satanic altars, whether they exist in the physical or spiritual are raised to fulfill one or more of the following purposes:
1. It is a place designed for offering sacrifices to Satan and his demons in order to appease them or to make a request for their assistance
2. It is a place where blood is shed, either of animals or of human, and because the life of anything is in its blood, there is blood crying at satanic altars..
3. It is a satanic dinning table where evil spirits and demons are served food. They can be served their usual food in order to attract their blessings upon the person offering the sacrifice, or they gave a wrong type of food on behalf of someone so that the demons can punish the person.
4. It is a place of spiritual exchange: At the satanic altars, they can exchange people’s glory and destiny to turn them to nonentity. I met a young lady whose brain was exchanged with stones, and she was sent out of a University due to poor academic performance. The lady was delivered by the power of God, and she was able to graduate with good result from another University. There was a case of another young man, that the enemy was able to see his shinning glory and exchange it for a man in search of fortunes. All these kind of exchanges take place at satanic altars.
